The most important part of installing hair extensions is creating hair color that blends and looks natural. Here at Morgan James Salon, we specialize in low-maintenance color and we love to create gorgeous, "lived-in" hair color. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How much hair will I need to purchase?
A: This is going to depend on your current hair length, style, and thickness. It is also going to depend on which method of application you're using to install your extensions. Obviously, clients who have more hair, need more hair installed in order to create a perfect blend. Also....some short hairstyles require more hair in order to help the hair blend. Occasionally a client can use 1 pack of hair but MOST of the time it requires 2-3 packs of hair.
With the Tape-In method, it is usually 1-4 packs
Weft hair is usually 2 packs, but occasionally 3 is needed for blending.
Q: Can the hair I purchase be colored or toned to match my hair perfectly?
A: Yes! Not only can we color it or correct the overall tone, but we can add a root shadow to help soften the look and help it to blend and conceal better. (All coloring and toning has an additional fee). Custom color-matching is the key to natural, beautiful looking hair extensions.
Q: How long will the hair I purchase last me? Can I re-use the same hair?
A: Most of the time you can re-use the hair you purchase at least once. With REALLY great home care you can probably use the hair 2-3 times. It is way more cost-effective to make the investment into great hair and re-using it for several months! Your stylist will help you to purchase the best quality hair extensions so that they last as long as possible. Please be aware...the lifespan of your extensions is almost completely dependent on how you care for them every day and what products you use on them. If you care for them well and use professional grade products you will get much more life out of them. If you DO NOT, they will dry out and begin to tangle much sooner.
Hair Extensions are expensive. In order to protect and extend the life of your extensions, we recommend the following care:
Always Wash with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. (preferably moisture based)
Use a lightweight oil on the mid to ends of the hair at least once a day. Keep oil off the root area of hair.
Letting your hair air-dry is great, but make sure to blow dry the tape area to ensure no moisture leaks into the tape, causing lifting.
Put your hair into a low pony or braid when sleeping. This will protect the cuticle of the hair.
Sleep on a silk pillowcase, again this cares for the cuticle of the hair.
Brush your extensions with a WET Brush or special Extension brush ALWAYS! Hold the hair near the root area and brush from the ends of your hair moving upward.
Brush a few times a day to prevent tangling. The more brushing the better.
When swimming, coat your hair in conditioner before entering the water and wear in a braid, low pony, high bun, or even better throw a hat on!.
Be aware, saltwater and chlorine WILL strip hair of color and moisture, and can shorten the life of hair extensions.
If you are wearing tape-in extensions; Do not apply conditioner directly to the tape area. This will cause the adhesive to fail and they will come out.
You do not want to "ball up" or "scrunch up" your hair like a child when washing. You want to stroke the hair in a downward motion, being gentle but still getting them clean. You may massage your scalp with your fingertips but you want to keep it gentle. There is no need to scrub. This will diminish the life of your hair and mostly likely cause tangling.
For the TAPE-IN method, you CANNOT wash your hair for at least 48 hours after the extensions have been installed. If at all possible I suggest 72 hours for the best possible bond but for my clients who have oily hair I know that can be hard so 48 will do.
